Tianjin Medical University (TMU) spearheaded the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization - Ophthalmology Alliance (SCO-OA), facilitating the high-quality development of the SCO and promoting the Shanghai Spirit.
The alliance was officially launched with the "2025 Ophthalmology Cooperation and People-to-People Connectivity Seminar and Unveiling Ceremony of the SCO-OA" held in Tianjin on August 21, 2025. It is committed to further promoting and enhancing exchanges and cooperation among SCO member states in the field of eye health.

Since the establishment of SCO-OA, the Department of Ophthalmology at TMU General Hospital has forged robust educational and clinical partnerships with Tajikistan's ophthalmology community. Through precise training, comprehensive support, and in-depth engagement, TMU General Hospital is dedicated to cultivating specialized ophthalmic professionals and driving coordinated regional development of eye care, contributing to people-to-people connectivity and technology sharing within the SCO framework.
In Dec 2025, Drs. Kalonzoda Mirzoamonullo Zikrulloi and Orifzhonov Ilkhom from the Nigoh Eye Clinic in Tajikistan undertook a one-month fellowship training at the Department of Ophthalmology, TMU General Hospital.

This advanced program was conducted by Professor Hua Yan, chairman of the SCO-OA and Academic Leader of Ophthalmology at TMU. Professor Yan offered hands-on surgical instruction, specifically focusing on the prevalent and complex eye diseases in Tajikistan, such as complicated cataracts and glaucoma combined with fundus abnormalities. Leveraging decades of clinical experience and academic insight, Prof Yan systematically analyzed surgical indications, tailored surgical strategies and managed perioperative complications.
Beyond surgical training, the visiting doctors participated in case discussions, shadowed Prof Yan during outpatient clinics, and engaged in academic exchange sessions. This comprehensive training approach has substantially improved their clinical competence in diagnosing and managing ocular diseases.
In the future, the Department of Ophthalmology at TMU General Hospital will consolidate and expand the achievements of the SCO Summit in Tianjin, strengthen ties with SCO member states and 'Belt and Road' partners, boost the development of global eye care and help build a global community of health.
