Tiangong University is a full-time public university jointly supported by the Ministry of Education and Tianjin Municipality and is a key institution in Tianjin's higher education development. Its origins date back to 1912, and it adopted its current name in 2000.
As one of the earliest institutions in China to offer higher education in textiles, it has grown into a comprehensive university with engineering as its core and coordinated development across multiple disciplines.
The university covers over 1.5 million square meters and comprises five academic divisions, 25 colleges, one residential college, and two affiliated hospitals. It currently has about 19,000 undergraduate students, more than 5,300 master's students, over 600 doctoral candidates, and nearly 2,000 international students.
Tiangong University has a faculty and staff of over 2,200, including more than 1,600 full-time teachers. Among them, over 1,000 hold doctoral degrees, and more than 1,000 have senior professional titles. The university boasts seven academicians, over 60 national-level distinguished experts, more than 200 provincial- and ministerial-level talents, and over 40 national and provincial high-level teaching and research teams.
Tiangong University offers 69 undergraduate programs, including 25 designated as national first-class disciplines. It hosts one national key discipline and 12 key disciplines at the municipal level. Six of its disciplines rank in the global top 1 percent according to ESI. The university has five postdoctoral research stations, seven doctoral programs, and 27 master's programs. Its Textile Science and Engineering discipline has received an A+ rating in national assessments.
Tiangong University emphasizes moral education and holistic student development. It operates national and municipal-level experimental teaching centers and platforms for innovation and entrepreneurship. Its students win more than 800 awards annually in competitions at the provincial level or above.
With strong research capabilities, Tiangong University undertakes major national research projects and houses key national laboratories, engineering research centers, and Ministry of Education key laboratories. Its research achievements are widely applied in fields such as epidemic prevention and national defense, with several breakthroughs breaking international monopolies. The university holds more than 1,000 patents and has established multiple platforms for technology commercialization. It is among the first group of national pilot universities for intellectual property rights.
Tiangong University actively promotes internationalization, partnering with over 110 universities across more than 60 countries and regions. It hosts a Confucius Institute, enrolls students from over 70 countries, and has established international centers for cultural and technical exchange and heritage.
The university values cultural heritage and innovation and has received honors such as "National Civilized Unit" and "Model Civilized Campus". It is also listed as a national training base for inheritors of China's intangible cultural heritage.
Tiangong University remains committed to moral education, serving national strategies, deepening reform and innovation, and striving to build a world-class university with Chinese characteristics under the "Double First-Class" initiative.
