The radishes cultivated in Xiaoshawo village, Xinkou town, Xiqing district, are well-known for their flavor, and have become a major resource for local rural revitalization and increasing the income of local famers.

Xiaoshawo village is located near the Xinkou town section of the Grand Canal, and has enriched high-quality soil suitable for the cultivation of radishes. After generations of cultivation, a total of 2,200 mu of farming lands have been used for growing radishes, and the agricultural product has led to the rapid development of the surrounding area, raising the income of local famers.

At present, the growing area of radishes in Xinkou town is 6,000 mu, with an annual output of 30 million kilograms and a sales value of 120 million yuan (about $17.4 million).

According to Ma Jing, secretary of the CPC Xinkou town Committee, in order to further develop the Shawo radish, the town has registered the corresponding trademark in a bid to promote the agricultural product to become a highly recognizable geographical indication product. The Shawo radish has also achieved the certificate of "Tianjin's high-quality agricultural product".

Moreover, the town has established Nov 18 as "Shawo Radish Day", on which, the Shawo Radish Festival will be held. As of 2022, this special event has been successfully held for 15 consecutive years. At the same time, visitors who come to participate in the event can learn about the growing environment, cultivation history and medicinal value of the Shawo radish in the 3,000-square-meter exhibition hall of the town.

In terms of exploring the new sales mode, Xinkou town has cooperated with local enterprises to carry out a series of agricultural product publicity events, live broadcasts, sales and other activities, constantly improving the added-value of the Shawo radish. Through posting videos and implementing live broadcasts on TikTok and other platforms, the radishes have been introduced to other areas of the nation. During the listing period of the Shawo radish, the daily turnover in the whole town can reach 50,000 kilograms, with daily sales of 600,000 yuan.

"In the future, we will promote the integrated development of the primary, secondary and tertiary industry of the Shawo radish, including carrying out the Shawo radish cultural tourism festival and constructing a themed rural cultural park on the radish, so as to strive for the further development of the area," said Ma.
