Tianjin has started building a seed bank in its Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The germplasm bank, scheduled to start operation in 2022, is capable of storing up to 400,000 kinds of seeds.

It is regarded as a fundamental way to boost the city’s modern seed development.

Covering an area of about 2,020 square meters, the bank has fully automated storage facilities, intelligent temperature and humidity control systems, and other necessary equipment to make sure the seeds are well preserved.

Tianjin’s seed industry has been in a national leading position for years. Its large high-quality and high-yield germplasm resources cultivated by the city’s research institutions and enterprises are popular in the country.

Cucumber varieties account for more than 70 percent of the country's same varieties. The planting areas for vegetable seeds such as cauliflower, celery, and Chinese cabbage account for 30 percent, 30 percent and 5 percent of the national planting area, respectively.
