Virus fighter donates salary to set up medical scholarship

Wu Qi, professor of the Medical College at Tianjin University and a leader of the city’s COVID-19 medical treatment expert team, recently donated his salary to set up the Wu Qi Medical Scholarship -- according to officials of the university, located in China’s major northern municipality and coastal metropolis of Tianjin.

University officials said the scholarship was to reward students who are admitted by  the experimental class for emerging medical education at Tianjin University and who are determined to make medicine and health their career. Under the arrangements, each scholarship winner in the first batch will be awarded 10,000 yuan ($1,430) every year.

The Experimental Class of Emerging Medical Education was set up by the univesity in 2020 to promote integration and interdisciplinary development in the disciplines of medicine, science and engineering as well for the development of emerging medical education.

“Medical and health care is a cause full of love that benefits all humankind. In the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic, medical workers have demonstrated their professional strengths,” said Professor Wu.

Professor Wu Qi is a respiratory expert and has been in the frontlines of the fights against SARS and COVID-19. As an educator in the field of medicine, he put his enthusiasm for his medical career into promoting the reform and development of higher medical education.

“Their professionalism comes from the pursuit of excellence in their medical career. These angels in white demonstrated the mission and responsibility of medical workers.” Wu added that he hoped that his scholarship could provide more resources for Tianjin University, to train top and innovative talent in the field of medical health.

The experimental class has four main majors: clinical medicine, pharmacy, biomedical engineering and intelligent medical engineering. They all employ integrated artificial intelligence, the internet of things, big data, robotics and other cutting-edge technology, officials said.

Candidates are admitted under broad categories. Their first academic year focuses on consolidating the foundation of mathematics, science, medicine and engineering.
