Tao Zui, dressed in a blue suit and red armband, circulates around the supermarkets and market stalls every day, making sure that COVID-19 prevention measures are being taken correctly by the businesses and their customers.

Tao is a young market supervisor on Liulin street in Tianjin’s Hexi district, and he has been on duty for two months, conducting daily patrols of market products and epidemic prevention measures, facilitating the resumption of work, and accommodating the various needs of residents.

"While it is essential to prevent and control the epidemic, we also need to ensure that the public can buy necessities normally and safely," Tao said.

As the epidemic situation eases, there are dozens of work resumption application calls from merchants every day. Tao patiently answers one by one, then goes to the merchants to conduct on-site inspections and follows the process to help them resume business.

At present, 90 percent of businesses in the area have resumed work, including 50 merchants in the large supermarkets and 177 merchants in the shopping plaza.

"Every day sees re-opened stores, so I have to patrol one by one every day, not only to check the health status of new employees, but also to check the needs of existing merchants," Tao said.

The daily prevention work is going well. Customers have become accustomed to having their temperature measured.

Because Tao’s home is far from his place of work - and time off duty can’t be ensured during this special period - he simply decided to live in his office, ready to offer a hand “whenever residents are in need”.

At 7pm on January 28, Tao received a call about online vegetable price gouging. He and his colleague launched an investigation and obtained evidence, and the matter was cleared up in seven days.

Tao has handled 63 such calls from whistleblowers, and helped 243 merchants in resuming their business.

During the epidemic, supervisors like Tao have been arranged by the Tianjin government to facilitate virus prevention and control work in 4,336 pharmacies, 150 large supermarkets, 392 vegetable markets and 21 wholesale markets citywide.

Volunteer leading experts and engineers have also been organized by government to provide consultations and guidance to local enterprises.

The first 106 municipal-level experts - all authoritative pioneers in their respective areas - have been announced by local government, covering eight key industries, including artificial intelligence, biomedicine, energy conservation, environmental protection, and new agriculture.

They will escort and assist businesses in overcoming technical bottlenecks, training talents, matching resources, marketing and development - all free of charge.

The experts and enterprises will be matched based on expertise and needs.

An online learning platform will also be established to facilitate communication and information sharing between experts and enterprises.
