After the 1911 Revolution, the traditional Chinese Spring Festival was replaced by Gregorian calendar as the national calendar in which the annual New Year holiday would be held from January 1 to 4. Ever since, the spring customs were revived and abolished several times with different governments being in power. Such acts infuriated the people, especially those who had just been in turmoil due to the frequent regime changes.

Since Feb 5, 1934, the relevant departments in Tianjin held a 15-day Chinese New Year Custom Culture Exhibition at the Municipal Public Education Center (Dashilan Hutong, Ximenli, and the Municipal Education Bureau).

The exhibition, occupying two exhibition halls and divided into six groups of customs, used pictures, texts and intuitive models to display the Spring Festival folk customs of Tianjin.

The first group presented the glutinous rice porridge and the alms-bearing beans, such as glass bottles of all kinds of grains.

The second group prepared for the New Year by renewing their house, by cleaning, pasting the window, and cleaning the statue of Lord Buddha. The third group conducted the sugar melon sacrifice, rituals and visiting relatives and friends. The fourth group offered sacrifice to the gods, the ancestors, and other detailed preparations of the New Year's goods. The fifth group was regarding the god of wealth, the fortune, and the singing of the songs on the New Year's Day. The sixth group was in charge of the Lantern Festival and fireworks, etc.
