Founded in 1958, Tianjin Normal University (TNU)'s predecessor was Tianjin Teachers College and its present name was given in June 1982.

The university currently has 23 colleges, one independent college, 49 research institutes, and 87 specialties for undergraduates. TNU enjoys academic exchanges with over 56 universities and colleges of more than 20 countries and regions and has successively invited 78 foreign experts from 14 countries. 

In addition, it made notable achievements international Chinese education. As one of the first 16 universities to set up Confucius Colleges worldwide, it launched the first Confucius College in Kenya in Sept 2005 and it currently is in charge of four Confucius Institutes.

The university has been honored with the title of "Advanced Confucius Institute" and "Model Confucius Institute" for its achievements numerous times.

The TNU has over 40,000 students, including 15,000 undergraduates, over 5,300 Ph.D. and MA students. It has 2,329 faculty and staff members, including 1,381 full-time teachers, among whom there are 572 professors and associate professors, and 39 doctoral supervisors.

With 12 floors above the ground, TNU's library is a comprehensive complex for borrowing and reading books, meetings and research.

The pen top shaped building sheds gentle light for students during nights, with 50 sunbirds on each side of the sculpture.
