Tianjin enterprises strengthen Belt and Road Initiative

Chinese Ambassador to Mongolia: Make Tianjin the bridgehead of the Sino-Mongolian-Russian Economic Corridor

Updated: 2018-11-09

In a interview Xing Haiming, Chinese Ambassador to Mongolia, first gave a general picture of China-Mongolia relations. The China-Mongolia border is the longest border for each country; and they remain good neighbors, friends, and partners, Xing said. Mongolia was among the first countries to recognize the People's Republic of China. A comprehensive strategic partnership was established in 2014, opening up a new era in bilateral relations.

Xing mentioned that China-Mongolia relations are developing smoothly with cooperative progress achieved in various fields. Continuous high-level exchanges boost strategic communication. Mongolia's respect for China's core interests and major concerns has enhanced political mutual trust between the two sides. Mutual understanding has been reached on implementing the Belt and Road Initiative and Mongolia's Road of Development.

China has for consecutive years been Mongolia's largest trade partner, and most important source of investment and aid. In 2017, bilateral trade volume reached $6.7 billion, and the Mongolian trade surplus with China was $3.9 billion. More than 60 percent of Mongolia's foreign trade is with China, contributing nearly 50 percent to Mongolia's economic development. Deep people-to-people and cultural exchanges have occurred. Last year, over 1.8 million people, more than half of Mongolia's population, came to China. Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms work smoothly in Mongolia. The Ulaanbaatar Chinese Cultural Center is an important platform for Displaying Chinese Culture and promoting cultural and tourism cooperation between the two countries. China Culture and outstanding projects such as Tourism Week are enjoying an increasing influence.

In speaking of the role of Tianjin in constructing the China-Mongolia Economic Corridor, Xing spoke highly of Tianjin's vigorous promotion of free trade area construction, its role in running Tianjin-Moscow and other Asian-European Continental Bridge sea-railway transit channels, and the innovative containerized intermodal system adopted at Tianjin Port, part of the China-Mongolia Economic Corridor. Tianjin port serves as an effective transport point, supporting trade between China, Mongolia and Russia.

Tianjin, as the point of departure for a great portion of Mongolia's daily essentials, is widely known in the country. Serving as a golden hub on the Belt and Road, Tianjin is also an indispensable base and bridgehead for the China-Mongolian-Russian Economic Corridor. In addition, Mongolia has expressed its desire to rely on Tianjin's rich experience in building free trade areas.

Tianjin and Ulaanbaatar have carried out close cooperation in many fields since the two cities established a friendship city relationship in 1992 and have since then enjoyed fruitful results. Mongolian citizens extend a warm invitation to Tianjin residents to visit Mongolia, deepen multilevel exchanges, and enjoy greater cooperation.
