Space-bred fruits and vegetables have been successfully introduced in Liangwangzhuang township in Jinghai district, Tianjin.
With support from the township government, Tianjin Tonghe Agricultural Development has taken the lead in planting varieties such as Yogurt Melon, Hangfan 80, Lyumi No 2, and Xuewang No 1.
The Yogurt Melon is a new hybrid of netted melon with a sweet and sour flavor. It has a fruit development period of 36 to 38 days, an average weight of about 2,000 grams, and a sugar content of up to 21 percent.
Space breeding uses microgravity, high vacuum, and strong radiation in space to induce genetic mutations, followed by ground-based selection for stable traits. These varieties typically offer high yield, strong disease resistance, good quality, and excellent taste.
The township government has established a technical guidance system, with senior agronomists regularly visiting the greenhouses to provide advice and solve problems. Policies, resources, and services are fully coordinated to support the project.
Guan Shichang, manager of Tonghe Agricultural Development, said that the company has its own planting platform, mature techniques, and a developed supply and marketing system, making it well-equipped for this trial. A successful harvest would not only diversify local diets with healthier, higher-quality food but also boost the company's overall development.
The first batch of space-bred melons has now entered its ripening period and is expected to hit the market in mid-June, bringing its unique flavor to local dining tables.
