Students at Wanquan Primary School in Heping district borrow books from the intelligent machine.

The 1.5-meter-high black and white intelligent book lenders are no strangers to students in the 44 middle and primary schools in Tianjin's Heping district.

They are near at hand in classrooms or corridors, with books ready to be borrowed by students with a simple swipe of their student cards.

The borrowing records serve as a date-based sound reference for the schools and teachers in designing popularity-winning courses and activities.

In the 9.98-square-kilometer core district of Tianjin, this is just one example of the information technology's application. Schools here have played a leading role in education for the whole city over previous decades, and they continue to lead in applying cutting-edge technologies to educational efficiency.

Digital technologies are mobilized to inspire course discussions, educational research and analysis, as well as school activities.

Meanwhile, the technologies have made individualized management of students much easier. Their usage in recording assessments, home work, and "mistake notes" provides every student with a clear study file for teachers who can then make tailored plans.

At some schools, teachers make "knowledge capsules" —  two-minute-long videos directed at students' universal mistakes identified by data.

According to Ming Jianping, head of the district education commission, information technology as an internal reform driver will revolutionize learning and student management, as well as the whole education ecology.

"When developing comprehensive quality programs, the school used to base everything on what it could do, but now with the dated material, it can refer to what students need, and then see what resources it can collect," said Lu Dongmei, head of local education informatization.

"There is a basic logic turn behind this change – using data makes student-centered education more of a reality. And it provides a path to deeply integrate teachers with students," Lu said.

The district also uses Tencent LBS digital technology to enhance school space utilization efficiency by forming a time-space student movement map.

During the coronavirus outbreak, nearly 300 million students and teachers turned to online applications.

According to the Ministry of Education, it is necessary to use a new generation of information technology to enhance the digital, networked, and intelligent level of education management in China.
