Tianjin is increasing the extent to which its hospitals can offer services online, with the intention of breaking down distances and providing quick and convenient medical services to a larger number of people.

Innovative efforts have been taken by the city’s key hospitals such as Tianjin Medical University General Hospital.

Careate Q, an online medical platform used by the hospital, provided online consultancies for nearly 100,000 patients during the epidemic this year.

40 clinical departments such as infections and respiratory have been available, with more than 1,000 specialists and doctors approved for online consultancy via the hospital's internet platform.

Zhang Jianning, Party chief of the hospital, said: “Using the online hospital, the patient can have a consultation first and then find the department they need more accurately.

As early as 2015, the hospital launched an app to facilitate patients in making appointments, payments, and checking their diagnosis reports.

It now has 3.5 million users. With the online diagnosis and treatment service, it has played an important role in striking a balance between curbing epidemic spread and meeting the medical needs of residents.

The hospital will provide online appointed nurses to provide basic on-site nursing services such as door-to-door blood samples, injections, and cardiac exams.

It also provides home care nursing guidance for discharged patients for social medical institutions and issues information and suggestions for the public.

"With the continuous improvement of new infrastructure such as 5G networks, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, I believe that online hospitals will quickly enter more people's daily lives, continue to meet people's increasing medical and health needs, and make their lives healthier and better," Zhang said.
