On Tuesday, Tianjin University signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with the Beijing Municipal Administration of Culture Heritage to join hands in promoting the preservation of heritage architecture in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region.

The two parties also unveiled the Beijing Institute of Heritage Architecture Research, which will be a joint endeavor of the two sides.

The 125-year-old university was among the nation’s first to start cultural heritage protection. It began as early as the 1940s, when the university’s School of Architecture conducted surveying and mapping of the Forbidden City.

Since the founding of the New China, the school has successively completed the surveying and mapping of many other imperial buildings of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, including Qianlong Garden in the Forbidden City, Jianfu Palace Garden, Ming Tombs, Beihai Park, Temple of Heaven and so on.

It also undertook the conservation planning, repair and display of relevant cultural relics in Beihai Park, the Summer Palace, the imperial temple and the Old Summer Palace, or Yuanmingyuan in Chinese.

With a well-established heritage conservation research team, the university boasts two key scientific research bases appointed by the National Cultural Heritage Administration - namely "Research on Surveying and Mapping of Cultural Relics" and "Surface Detection and Analysis of Cultural Relics" - plus one key laboratory sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and one institute studying oral history designated by the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Association.

It also has two think tanks included in the Chinese Think Tank Index (CTTI) about cultural heritage protection and Chinese traditional villages and architectural and cultural innovation.

It has been revealed that the newly-established Beijing Institute of Heritage Architecture Research will fully utilize Tianjin University’s research force and experience to address the preservation of cultural heritage in the BTH region.

"Our University is committed to preserving and inheriting cultural heritage," said Yuan Yingjin, the vice president of Tianjin University. "We will strive to make the Beijing Institute of Heritage Architecture Research a model of BTH cooperation."
